Grand final chance dawns

Isis Town and Country - - Sport - By MATTHEW MCINERNEY

ALL Isis Crushers need to do to reach the Spring Cup grand final is to win their first finals match in five years.

The Crushers haven’t appeared in the finals for that period of time, and will face Turtles on Friday for their chance to have another crack at Barbarians for the Spring Cup premiership.

Turtles won the last meeting between the two sides at Childers Showground a fortnight ago, with a last-minute try being all that kept the Crushers from a fairytale win at home.

Isis will have to be at its best to have any chance of pipping the strong Turtles outfit, which has dominated the competition for years.

If the Crushers are able to replicate their form from the past two weeks, they should go close, with last week’s 12–7 loss to Barbarians one of their best comeback efforts in years.

The Crushers got off to a terrible start, conceding two tries to the minor premiers in the first 15 minutes.

Isis clawed its way back into the contest, regaining confidence to keep Barbarians scoreless for the rest of the first half.

The team members regrouped at half-time and made it their prerogative to “own” the second half, with the forwards lifting across the park.

Stronger runs and heavier hits saw the Crushers slowly gain control of the match, with prop Fish Lalomanu busting his way through the defence to score the sole try for Isis.

Crushers’ best back award-winner, Kale Hendle, converted the try.

Isis expanded its attack in an attempt to secure a late winner, but the Barbarians’ defence proved too strong.

Gutsy fullback Jacob Klassen capped a strong year to win the Crushers’ player of the year at the club’s award night at the Federal Hotel on Saturday.

Klassen was named player of the year for his commitment to the team, with the fullback “playing every game, not missing any game time and often being one of the first to training”.
