Work on upgrades to start

Isis Town and Country - - News -

MORE than $1 million is expected to be invested in the main street of Childers in coming months as work starts on the Childers Streetscape project.

The design has been granted preliminary approval by the Department of Transport and Main Roads and will soon be discussed with traders and property owners in the construction area, Bundaberg Regional Council has advised.

Councillor Tony Ricciardi said State Government had contributed $500,000 to the project, to be spent this financial year.

Bundaberg council will meet the remaining costs.

The project will focus on both sides of the highway between the IGA and McDonald’s and will bring the target area into line with the remainder of the Childers CBD.

Cr Ricciardi said work was also expected to start on a new playground and recreation area located between the new Crescent Street car park and Millennium Park.

“Hopefully work will commence this week on the project, with almost $80,000 of the $150,000 budget to be spent on stage one,” he said.

“This project was identified by the local chamber of commerce years ago as a desirable means of attracting visitors and also providing additional facilities for local residents.”

Also going towards to the upgrade is $250 donated by St Joseph’s School in Childers about six years ago.

The funds were to be used by the council for any recreational development in Millennium Park.

READY TO GO: Millennium Park is fenced in preparation.
