THE countdown is on to the Gin Gin Show after the first official event of the calendar.

Saturday’s High Tea presented an opportunity for stallholders to show off their wares and for the public to meet Miss Showgirl and Rural Ambassador entrants.

There was only one entrant in both categories, and Town & Country caught up with both Theresa Williams and Byron Bruggemann to find out a bit more about the pair.

Miss Williams is a 20-year-old accounting student who has lived in the area for about five years.

She grew up in New South Wales town of Narrabri, and lived there with family until she was 15.

“We used to visit the area all the time and eventually the family decided to move,” Miss Williams said.

Miss Williams is a keen touch footballer and is a regular at Active Fitness in town. She said she entered the competition to encourage more locals to get involved.

“I want to encourage more locals to participate in events around town and to promote agriculture,” she said.

Mr Bruggemann was born in Mt Isa and moved to Gin Gin when he was 13.

Living on a property just outside town, he juggles running cattle with a keen passion for motocross riding.

He races for Rum City Motorcycle Club and is a four-time senior open champion.

“This season has already started and it hasn’t gone too badly so far,” he said.

He said he put his hand up for Rural Ambassador to give something back to Gin Gin.

“I just wanted to give back to the community that has supported me so much, and to further promote agriculture,” he said.

The High Tea doubles as a fundraiser for the Show Ball, which is scheduled to be held at Gin Gin RSL on May 16. The 106th Gin Gin Show will be on May 30-31.
