WOODGATE Men’s Shed official opening is the start of a new chapter for the mental health group.

In front of a large crowd that included most Bundaberg Regional Council representatives, Burnett MP Stephen Bennett, Hinkler MP Keith Pitt and representatives from other men’s sheds in the region, Woodgate president Col Ensbey officially opened the new structure last Thursday.

It was a long time coming for the group, and the physical structure built by local builders Wayne Thompson and Gary Jones from a combination of grants signalled the end of a five-year journey.

Local historian and foundation committee secretary Max Emery outlined that journey, and detailed the hurdles the group had to jump since they started in 2010.

Mr Ensbey could not have been happier.

“There is plenty to work with here,” he said.

“We got a lot through grants but also through local builders and business people. There were a lot of hurdles along the way but we persevered.

“The turnout (at the opening) speaks for itself. I didn’t expect to see that many people.”

Bundaberg Mayor Mal Forman congratulated the men’s shed on the occasion.

“It’s been quite a few years but council is very pleased to have worked with them,” Cr Forman said.

“I admire their tenacity. They had a goal to achieve and they did just that.”

The new shed is more than just a building, with the multitude of mental health benefits the major appeal for Mr Ensbey and Mr Bennett.

“The health side is the biggest thing,” Mr Ensbey said.

“We have a membership of about 70 that work here and have a chat, but we really just want to get the lonely people out of their homes.”

Mr Bennett’s role in helping the organisation was publicly acknowledged by members but the Burnett MP did what he could to focus on the shed’s benefits.

“To see it reach its full conclusion is fantastic,” he said.

“More importantly, Woodgate now has a great asset that allows men to deal with a lot of issues together.”

Woodgate Men’s Shed is on the corner of Seventh Ave and Acacia St.
