CALL FOR CHILDERS FESTIVAL MEMORABILIA
Memorabilia sought to celebrate 20 years of the Childers Festival
AS THE only festival to close the Bruce Hwy, the Childers Festival is already one of the biggest events on the local calendar.
This year it is set to be the biggest yet, as the event celebrates 20 years.
To help mark the occasion, Bundaberg Regional Council is asking for residents and visitors to share memories and memorabilia as part of an historic exhibition.
Childers librarian Denise Rapkins hasn’t missed a festival in 15 years and knows many residents are as passionate about the festival as she is. “It turns our town into a cultural hub,” Mrs Rapkins said.
Mrs Rapkins has donated photos from her personal collection and has had a resident submit programs from past years and she’s encouraging other residents to do the same.
“There are plenty of residents who go each year and I wouldn’t hesitate to say there would be a number of residents who have been to every single festival since its inception,” Mrs Rapkins.
“Bring any memorabilia you have kept over the years in to the library to help us highlight this important milestone.
“It doesn’t have to be a photo, it could be anything that celebrates the history of the Childers Festival.”
Community Services spokeswoman Cr Judy Peters said anything from photographs to souvenirs could be submitted to any Bundaberg Regional Library for inclusion.
“The Childers Festival had fairly humble beginnings but the grit and determination of the local community to see it succeed ensured it was an enterprise that would not fail,” Cr Peters said.
Cr Peters also called for stallholders and performers to get involved in the event that attracts 40,000 people each year.
“The Childers Festival never fails to attract huge crowds each year as people from across the state gather to celebrate multicultural entertainment and cuisine in this beautiful heritage location,” Cr Peters said.
Stallholder and performer expressions of interest close on March 31. Apply at www.childersfestival.com.au or phone 1300 883 699.
Any memorabilia included in the exhibition will be returned.
