NEW FOOD MARKET
A SMALL group of enterprising locals are determined to set up a new food and growers’ market in Childers to take advantage of the fresh produce available in the region.
Childers Twilight Food and Growers’ Markets co-ordinator Peter Eschbach said the idea for the monthly evening market came about after a throwaway line from a friend.
“A friend of ours asked ‘why do we not have a farmers’ market in town’ and he put that up on Facebook and it went from there,” he said.
“We all sat down and said ‘let’s make it happen’.”
Mr Eschbach there were about 10 people involved at this stage, with support coming from Vintner’s Secret and Ohana Winery

as well as some local growers.
“We want to keep this local,” he said. “So if you’re a farmer and want to get involved or simply passionate about cooking food and want to set up a stall, then let us know.”
Mr Eschbach said initially the event would be held monthly at the recently upgraded Millennium Park but, if successful, could run fortnightly.
“If people want to go out for a night they can sit down, have a glass of wine and a meal,” he said.
“We’re trying to encourage some of the local shops to stay open a little bit longer too.
“It’s such a pretty town at night-time. We want to take advantage of that.”
The group will hold an information night at Paragon Theatre on Wednesday, June 3 at 7pm and is inviting people interested to come along.
