A SEA of fluorescent orange could be seen along the foreshore of Woodgate Beach last Thursday as council workers and locals celebrated the first completed section of the new and improved pathway.

Bundaberg Regional Council roads and drainage spokesman Tony Ricciardi said the 14km pathway was being restored after years of deterioration.

“Over time, the maintenance has slowly caught up so, through Australian Government funding, we were able to set up a project to get the pathway back to a good condition,” he said.

“So far about 2km, from the boat ramp to the barbecue area, has been completed.”

The Pathways Beautification Project coincides with the NEATO Employment Services Career Development Program, which gives job seekers the opportunity to gain skills in a number of different areas.

According to council supervisor Peter Buse, the project is one of many that job seekers will work on during the year.

“They are trained in tree planting, mowing, watering and other horticultural skills,” he said.

“We have a rotational roster that sees around 20 keen workers out and about every day doing various jobs around the region.”

The project is expected to take about six months to complete.
