A NEW shop has opened in the heart of Childers that is sure to bring some extra pizzazz to the area.

That Quirky Place officially opened its doors last Wednesday in the building that previously housed the Vietnamese Restaurant.

It is part of the State Heritage-listed “Coronation Building”, built for Johann Wilhelm Albert Kulick, then owner of the Grand Hotel next door, back in the early 1900s.

New owner Susan Rainbow spent several years in Cooktown before returning to the Childers area running the Cordalba General Store.

Susan’s late husband William Rainbow was born in Childers and Susan said she has had ties to the town for more than 35 years.

“Our dream was to always have a business here,” Mrs Rainbow said.

“I’m very lucky this building became available at the right time.”

Mrs Rainbow said That Quirky Place was a gift shop with a twist, and suppliers have been selected carefully.

“The items are available in limited numbers, which means that the shop will keep changing,” she said.

That Quirky Place owner Susan Rainbow I wanted to create a place where people feel relaxed and welcomed. A place where people can have a look around without feeling pressured...

“There are kids’ toys, stuffed toys and colourful fabric handbags that are handmade locally.

“We also stock men’s gifts, homewares and much more.”

Following on from the retro look, customers can enjoy a 1950s-style milk bar that invites people to have a break, try some handmade lollies or a waffle cone.

Mrs Rainbow called this “the nook” that comes with a comfy couch to relax and enjoy an old fashioned spider or sundae.

“I wanted to create a place where people feel relaxed and welcomed,” she said.

“A place where people can have a look around without feeling pressured to buy anything.”

That Quirky Place is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 9.30am-4pm.
