NOEL Schmidt celebrated his 101st birthday on Friday, July 24.

He was visited by Member for Burnett Stephen Bennett, who presented him with a card and box of chocolates.

“I know Noel likes his chocolate, so how could I not give him a box for his birthday,” Mr Bennett said.

“It’s an amazing milestone and I had to wish him a happy birthday.”

Mr Bennett took time out of his busy calendar to sit with Mr Schmidt and to chat about growing up in the Childers area.

They spoke about the Childers Festival, family and the community of Childers and how he has seen changes and developments over the decades.

Mr Schmidt said: “I can remember the old tobacco farms and mills in the area.”

Mr Schmidt was asked if he had ever been a smoker.

“I quit smoking many times and took it up again. I finally quit about 50 years ago. Don’t we all quit many times!” Mr Schmidt said.

Earlier in the day Mr Schmidt was visited by family and friends to celebrate his 101st birthday.

Mr Schmidt spoke proudly of his family and his daughter’s battle with multiple sclerosis (MS).

Mr Schmidt was concerned with his daughter’s condition and asked Mr Bennett if there was anything he could do to get treatment for his daughter.

Mr Schmidt said that he had spent thousands of dollars on treatment and nothing had worked.

Mr Schmidt got teary-eyed talking about his daughter’s battle with MS.

“It would be my pleasure Noel. I will look into that for you. I need to do some research on MS and the treatments,” Mr Bennett said.

For 97 years Mr Schmidt lived in the family home, only recently moving into Forest View Aged Care facility. He was from a hard-working farming family and misses working.

Mr Schmidt was asked if he had a secret to living a long and happy life.

His reply was a cheeky smile.

Noel Schmidt I quit smoking many times and took it up again. I finally quit about 50 years ago. Don’t we all quit many times!
