AS THE South Kolan Sharks’ hunt for back-to-back Northern Districts Rugby League titles gains momentum, the Gin Gin Hawks pulled off one of the upsets of the season in the first round of the finals at Agnes Water.
As expected, South Kolan toughed out a win, 32-8 over the Magpies, securing a place in the August 23 decider.
While the Hawks shocked the competition with a 37-22 victory over Avondale to progress a week deeper into the play-offs.
Avondale might have been down on troops in the forwards, however that didn’t stop the sideline experts predicting a win to the Tigers.
With a core group of 10 players who have been through the good and bad times over the past three seasons, Gin Gin’s Ashley Helmore thought differently from everyone else before the game.
“There was a bit of belief in the team mate,” Helmore said.
“We knew if we turned up on the day we’d be right.”
With players like Matt Card, Benjamin Kuskey and the Blair brothers, Todd and Brendan, among the players in good form, the belief looks to be growing at the Hawks.
South Kolan coach Dean Akers was in two minds after making it cruising into the grand final, urging his players to improve on a few areas of their game.
Akers said the Sharks didn’t respect the football players never took a backward step.
The preliminary final will be played in South Kolan on Sunday between Gin Gin and Miriam Vale, and the game could be one of the best this year.
Helmore couldn’t wait for the game this week and said he expects plenty of feeling. “Miriam Vale and Gin Gin go way back – it’s going to be a bash fest,” he said.
“We are going to have to step it up if we want to play in the grand final.” enough and if they want to win consecutive titles they had to improve in that area.
