Ice-cream company has nation licked
A DISCUSSION about an ice-cream protein on a popular radio talkback show has generated widespread publicity for Mammino Gourmet Ice Cream.
Sydney radio identity Ray Hadley hosted a conversation about ice cream earlier this week and people from across the country called in to talk up the ice cream made by the Childers company.
Mammino Gourmet Ice Cream owner Teena Mammino was in Brisbane when she received a frantic phone call from her daughter Amber Randall telling her she needed to call a “Ray Shortly” straight away.
“I had no idea it was Ray Hadley,” Mrs Mammino said.
“I rang and got this producer from 2GB who played me a snippet of people ringing in about how good our ice cream was.
“Then he put me live to Ray Hadley on the radio. I had the shakes, you know when you get so excited and nervous all at once.
“The funny thing was he said ‘Teena I’ve decided I want to make you big’ and I thought how does he know I’m not a big person? I definitely eat enough ice cream I could be big, but he meant our company.
“He said ‘I want to make you big, I want to make you Australia-wide rather than just being available in Queensland’.
“It’s really nice to think little companies like ours get recognition after all the hard work we’ve done over the last 20 years.
“It’s nice to hear our customers are ringing to say how good our product is.”
Mrs Mammino said Mammino ice cream is only available in Queensland but the publicity may help them expand further afield.
“We do things like the Ekka, the Woodford Folk Festival, the Country Music Muster and that crowd isn’t just the Wide Bay people, it actually is national,” she said.
“We have been asked numerous times to distribute into New South Wales but we’ll just see what becomes of it.
“We’ve tried to keep it to a size where we can control every aspect of it and keep the quality in the product.”
“Maybe next year we might look at distributing outside of Queensland.”
