New building works decision ensures fair competition
RESIDENTS across the region wanting to source building certification services will now need to contact private building certifiers.
This follows Bundaberg Regional Council’s decision to discontinue its building certification section.
From this week, the council will no longer be accepting applications for building works.
However, the council will still provide inspection services for any works that it has previously approved, including issuance of final inspection certificates.
Cr Ross Sommerfeld said in recent years the demand for this service from council sources had drastically diminished to a point where it was now not viable to maintain the service.
“We have two employees engaged in this field and both have been in discussion with council regarding their future roles,” he said.
The certification of buildings was solely council-based but it was opened to private enterprise to ensure competition and to enable applications to be handled in a timely manner.
Cr Sommerfeld said building inspectors had been a part and parcel of the council’s workforce for decades but there was now such significant competition in the marketplace that the council had deemed it appropriate to withdraw this service.
“Council will still provide a general enquiry service for those seeking advice about building matters, which can be accessed by phone or over the counter at the council’s main administration centre in Bourbong St,” Cr Sommerfeld said.
Council will also continue to hold all records, past and present, relating to building approvals and inspections and the public will still have access to that resource.
This includes all details of approvals granted by private building certifiers that are provided to the council.
“I believe the certification industry locally will remain well resourced with professionals who can capably handle the requirements of anyone seeking inspections and certification services,” Cr Sommerfeld said.
“People wishing to find a private building certifier should check the Yellow Pages or similar search engine.”
