Preparing for storm season

Isis Town and Country - - Kolan News -

OVER the past 10 weeks the Gin Gin SES had been getting the community ready for storm season. Each week the SES provided helpful hints, tips and suggestions to be storm ready.

Thursday, September 17, saw the SES set themselves up at display at the front doors of IGA.

The dedicated volunteers aim to prepare the entire town of Queensland’s most friendly town, Gin Gin.

Acting local controller Kellie Bolstad said we all need to prepare ourselves, our family and our home.

The team spent the day, working in shifts, greeting every shopper, locals and visitors, asking the question: Are you storm ready?

The volunteers handed out flyers, stickers, magnets and USB sticks.

The USB stick contained helpful fact sheets and pictures for children to colour in. The USB can also be used to save important documents on.

“It’s surprising to know, for every one person prepared there are 10 which are not,” Ms Rose said.

Ms Midge Rose is the acting deputy controller for the Gin Gin SES and said now Kellie and I have been trained as Volunteer Community Educators (VCE) it’s important we actively get out and to raise awareness.

“Storms can happen without warning and this time of the year we all need to be ready,” Ms Rose said.

In the coming months the region will experience the typical weather for Queensland. Being a sub-tropical region flash floods and strong winds are common.

“We received great support from Gin Gin and the SES saw a massive $300 placed into the donations tin,” Mrs Bolstad said.

The money raised will go towards equipment for the unit.

“The volunteers today, George, Cheryl, Dean, Oliver and Lane should all be very proud of their efforts, getting the message out,” Ms Rose said.

The VCE is an important course for the SES as it allows the volunteers to actively educate the community, groups and schools.

“We would like to offer our skills to schools, kindy and social groups, to do presentations on how to prepare and be storm ready,” Ms Rose said.
