Across the Waves takes its first win in Division 1 finals
THE spectators at the men’s pennant finals at Elliott Heads Bowls Club on Saturday experienced an atmosphere not quite seen before in the district, with 152 bowlers playing across three greens.
Eight clubs were represented over seven division finals.
Across The Waves won its first Division 1 flag, avenging last year’s result defeating Bargara by two rinks to one and an 11-shot margin.
With the zone play-offs in Gladstone next weekend, ATW players will be keen to take this momentum to the next level.
They play Rockhampton in the morning, and the winners face Gladstone in the afternoon for a spot in the state final eight.
Bargara played in four finals on Saturday and was successful in all other divisions contested.
In Div 2, Bargara defeated Moore Park two rinks to one. Brothers won Div 3 against Bundaberg, which should see them graduate to Div 2 next year.
In one of the closest contests of the day, Div 4 was another showdown between ATW and Bargara.
At the completion of the allotted 63 ends, scores were level. Bargara took the title after extra ends were required.
Bargara took out its third flag for the year in Div 5, accounting for Childers. Burnett Club, which had a blend of junior and senior players, took out Div 6 over ATW.
With some relatively new and talented bowlers in its midst, East Bundaberg was too strong for Bundaberg in Div 7.
Ladies’ pennant play-offs in Div 1 will draw to a close this week.
Bargara seems to have a stranglehold on the competition, although Woodgate, which is running second, did cause an upset in its away game against Bargara during the week.
With a home-and-away format played during each week, Bargara travelled to Woodgate and avenged its loss from the day before.
The Div 2 ladies’ pennant has been completed, with Brothers taking out the flag.
Gin Gin, Bargara and Moore Park were next on the ladder in that order. Well done to all teams.
Congratulations to all clubs for their participation throughout the season.
A special thanks to Elliott Heads Bowls Club, its volunteers, and greenkeeper Steve for the great venue and hospitality provided on Saturday.
