No to GST hike

Isis Town and Country - - Opinion -

HOW perfidious can politicians be? John Howard and his government promised, written in blood, the GST would never rise above 10%. As Senator Macdonald said recently: “From the Prime Minister down, we all committed our promise to blood and said that it (the GST) would never increase beyond 10%. We committed in response to specific allegations at the time that this was just the first step.” Instead, he proposed a removal of exemptions, thus broadening the tax “…to allow the states to reduce some of the state taxes and charges which were part of the original deal.” Gimme a break! No matter how much the GST is increased and widened, even if the GST trans-substantiated, there will be no reduction in state taxes. And the concept of compensation for low incomes is an exercise in temporary churning gradually expunged over time.
