Clubs donate after house fire
IT GIVES me great pleasure to report on our activities over the weekend.
Wynnum club members Digit, Undertaker, Donkey, Irish, Jeff and Agent 86 conducted a second week of fundraising for the Koopu family of Wynnum.
The Koopu family members lost their home in a tragic house fire and were left with only the clothes on their back.
The Rugby community of Bundaberg donated the grand sum of $524.10. In addition to this, Rum Ruckers purchased from Struddy’s Sports a pair of sporting shoes for each of the Koopu children.
Saturday: On arrival at Wynnum Club Grounds the team was greeted by the site of four beautiful pitches nestled against the backdrop of Morton Bay.
The bus buddies were quick to catch up with teammates who had travelled to Brisbane separately.
Teams represented at the festival included Wynnum, XXXX, Sunnybank, GPS, Pine Rivers, Logan, Goodna, Gladstone, Hervey Bay, Isis, Bears, Bodgies, Wests, Toothless Tigers, Crabs, Easts Old Boys, Redcliffe and Rum Ruckers.
Rum Ruckers were teamed with XXXX Goldies for the afternoon’s draw, with us playing Wynnum club in round one, then Goodna group in round two and then we were given the opportunity to be members of a Barbarian team to take on a Wynnum President’s First XV.
Following the rugby the teams supported the raffles, bar and canteen before a presentation ceremony was conducted for the Koopu family.
Rum Ruckers presented Stewart Koopu with one of our club ties, presented the four Koopu children with their new sporting shoes, on behalf of the Bundaberg rugby community.
The teams presented the sum of $600.00 (additional funds were added by individuals at the festival during the day) to the family.
The Koopu family was appreciative of the support shown to them as was the Wynnum club and the wider Queensland veteran rugby community.
On Saturday people couldn’t believe that teams travelled so far at short notice to join in on the activities and show their support.
The storms and rain made for a difficult trip home, with the teams arriving home a little later than planned.
All players had a great day. It was a great trip, and the team should be very proud of their achievements.
