Online map shows property flood risk
WITH storm season upon us, Bundaberg Regional Council is reminding residents to familiarise themselves with the online flood mapping tool for the Burnett River.
Mayor Mal Forman said living in a stunning coastal location like the Bundaberg region was not without its hazards, particularly during storm and cyclone season.
“We have already experienced a number of good downpours in recent weeks, which have served as a timely reminder that we need to prepare for storm season,” Cr Forman said.
“While we in no way want residents to become alarmed about the possibility of an extreme weather event, it is essential that you use all available information to assess your individual risk.”
Cr Forman said the council’s award-winning flood mapping tool showed residents how various river gauge levels along the Lower Burnett River catchment could impact individual properties.
“I would strongly recommend all residents living adjacent to the Burnett River take advantage of this tool and share the maps with friends and family to improve our community’s understanding of flood behaviour on the Burnett River.
“It uses historical data and calibrated models to estimate flooding on a specific property, which residents can use as a guide in future weather events to assess their flood risk and make plans for self-evacuation.
“While it can be accessed online all year round, throughout storm season this tool is available from the homepage of council’s website.”
Google Burnett River Flood Gauge Maps or head to www.bundaberg.qld. gov.au and click on the ‘Burnett River flood gauge mapping’ tab to access the flood mapping tool.
For information on how to prepare an emergency kit and evacuation kit, look for “disaster management” under the “Residents and Community” tab on the website.
