Bundaberg Rural Fire Service helped by the rain at Coonar

Isis Town and Country - - News -

THE rain helped dampen dry conditions across the region, but much more is needed.

Bundaberg Rural Fire Service acting area director Phil Williams said the fires from the weekend were contained but there was still a need for more rain.

“It might calm down for a little while,” he said.

“It will take a lot more rain to wet the grounds thoroughly.”

On Friday a fire broke out at Coonarr and took more than 48 hours to contain.

Saturday saw the fire burning within containment lines with up to 15 fire crews, along with Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service staff, conducting back burning operations.

Mr Williams said it was hard to pin-point the cause of all fires but some had been started in camping areas and fires were a likely cause.

“Lately it’s been campfires or silly behaviour,” Mr Williams said.

“People need to be mindful at this time of year.

“Especially when the weather is dry.”
