Sense of community at clubs
WITH a strong push for parents to get their children off the couch and out playing a sport, Childers and surrounding districts are providing a wealth of options when it comes to joining a club.
Covering a variety of age groups, these clubs allow people to try a new sport or develop their skills further, meet new people and really feel like they are part of something.
Given the area has a wealth of open space, good fields, halls and other resources available to clubs, there is such potential to try something new.
Isis and District Swimming Club vice-president Jenny Black said she had seen a huge difference in her daughter’s confidence since joining the club.
“She was very introverted before joining the swimming club and it has brought her right out and really given her the ability to socialise and learn new skills,” she said.
“I find even for myself as a parent that it is a great community atmosphere and I would never have met half the people I have if it wasn’t for swimming club.”
As well as being an affordable option for parents, Jenny liked the fitness aspect for the children.
“This is a non-contact sport and, because we travel to other meets, children learn that even though they may be tired they have to get in the pool and get it done.
“It is a great way for children to learn new skills in the pool three or four times a week with coach Mike Roberts and as a real cardio sport they are able to build up their respiratory system well.
“Basically it is fun, fitness and skill based and gets everyone involved.”
Another local club promoting fun and exercise in the outdoors, plus the chance to develop new skills, is the Isis District Horse and Pony Club.
Club secretary Gaye Cook said the club was a nice and safe environment for those interested in horses to mix with people of similar interests.
“While those wanting to join the club must have their own horse, we find that many enjoy the opportunity to learn more about riding and the care of their horse,” she said.
