Globetrotter on ride of lifetime
AS THE region celebrated Australia Day, a solo Englishman had spent 40 days riding his bike 1879km from Melbourne to Gin Gin as part of his massive around-the-world adventure.
Jason Kind’s journey started back in his home town of Hastings, England, were he set off on an adventure of a lifetime.
The 46-year-old rediscovered his passion for bike riding six years ago and decided to change his life.
“All I did was work and never took a holiday. I was stressed and on the verge of having a stroke.
“It was now or never, so I made it happen,” he said.
His adventure started on March 31, 2014, when he crossed the English Channel to France and rode into Belgium and across Europe into Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran and deep into the Middle East.
Mr Kind then rode into Asia, enjoying the sights and culture of Burma, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
“I have met some amazing people along the way and great support for strangers encouraging me to keep going,” he said.
“I flew from Vietnam to Darwin and set my sights on Adelaide. I have a great mate that lives there so I spent time with him and it was great to catch up.
“The ride to Adelaide along the Stuart Hwy was amazing – the sights and towns along the way.
“I’m lost for words on how amazing central Australia is.”
From Adelaide he rode to Melbourne to be reunited with his twin.
“My sister has lived in Australia for years and 17 years is a long time. It was a great catch-up.”
His adventure continued across the Tasman Sea to New Zealand, where he rode around the two islands before flying back to Melbourne and continuing his ride up the east coast.
“It’s a race against time as I don’t want to overstay my visa,” Mr Kind said.
“I am heading north on the Bruce Hwy and plan to head towards Mt Isa and back up to Darwin.
“Australians are super friendly and I have been encouraged every step of the way.”
Some might call him crazy but he said he was living the Australian dream, travelling the country and experiencing new places.
He just happened to be riding a bike.
“Every Pom wants to visit Australia,” he said.
