Valiant Isis Devils feel waves of defeat

Isis Town and Country - - Sport -

IN THE second round of the Bundaberg Rugby League A grade competition, the Isis Devils felt the full force of the resurgent Waves Tigers.

The Devils were defeated by Waves 46-18 at Maryborough’s Eskdale Park, but they were far from disgraced against a more powerful team.

And a month and a half later Isis has the opportunity to make amends for the loss when the two teams clash at Salter Oval on Sunday.

In the weeks that followed Isis’s first game of the year it has been struggling to field 17 players and the results have reflected the sad fact.

Against Easts in the 46-12 round-seven loss the Devils had players on the bench and started to signs of greater spirit and with that came improvement on the field.

This week, the Devils’ character will be truly tested.

Waves have become a real threat for the 2016 premiership and Isis forward Rhys Neil knows Isis is not facing the toothless Tigers of the past few seasons.

“They are a totally different outfit now so we have to adjust to them but we will stick to our football,” Neil said.

“Waves is starting to be dynamic side and its starting to change the whole come up.”

With ex-international Antonio Kaufusi at the helm and strong backing from supporters willing to offer financial help the Tigers have lost just two games this season.

Competition heavyweights Brothers and Hervey Bay have been the only teams capable of beating Waves this season and Neil said improvement will need to be made to have a chance this weekend.

“We didn’t take them lightly in the first round but hopefully we can build on our positives and build on our negatives,” Neil said.

The Devils take on Waves at 1.15pm on Sunday, with the women’s team playing at 10.30am and reserves at 11.45am.
