Easts’ second win for season
THE Magpies are hoping Sunday’s win is the confidence boost they need.
In one of the shocks of the season so far, Eastern Suburbs defeated Past Brothers 34-28 to remain a contender for the top four in the Bundaberg Rugby League competition.
After getting out to a 10-0 lead, Brothers fought back as both teams exchanged tries in the second half.
Two late tries to Easts and strong defence at the end gave the Pies their second straight win.
Magpies captain Reece Maughan said it was a special day for the club.
“It wasn’t easy but the boys pushed through,” he said. “We’ve had a little bit of drama off-field but it has all come together now.”
Despite the win, Maughan said his team struggled in the middle of the contest.
“We had a bit of a slump for 40 minutes in the middle of the match through exhaustion,” he said.
“It was pretty hot and both teams struggled.”
After beating the defending premiers, the Magpies know they can do well in the second half of the year.
“The boys will take a lot of confidence out of it.”
The Magpies face Hervey Bay next week.
