The opening round of the Club Championships saw a number of fine scores in the pleasant conditions. Larry Pershouse recorded nett 67 to win the daily competition run in conjunction with the championships. Peter Hutton with 68 nett was second on a countback from Peter Hrelja, third on a countback from Ivan Philpott. Rundowns went to Phil Luckett on 69, Craig Reynolds also on 69, Laszlo Volgyesi, again on 69, followed by Bill Cowan on 70 and Ross Nicol on 71. Clinton Dowling (4.1m) won the pinshot on 1and 10, no B Division player recording his name for an approach. Mark McAulay (6.69m) won the A Division approach on 4and 13, Larry Pershouse (9.8m) winning the B Division approach. The first round of the championships saw the following front runners. In A Grade former champion Clinton Dowling (recent record equaller) and son Damien are locked together at 76 gross; in B-grade Phil Luckett on 83 leads Peter Hutton on 87; and in C-grade Larry Pershouse on 87 has a comfortable lead over last year’s champion Roger Draper. Next Saturday and Sunday the Club Championships continue together with a daily competition open also to members who are not competing in the championships. A ‘sausage sizzle’ will follow Saturday’s game. As usual for the Show Public Holiday on Thursday members are invited to enjoy aB, B or B competition. Hit-off at 12.30pm. The “Pizza and Pasta” evening following the presentations and in conjunction with a club “Happy Hour”, proved another successful occasion for those who enjoyed the delicious variety of foods offered by Helen Ricciardi, very much appreciated.
Vicki McAulay won the single stableford competition on Thursday with 39 points, from Sandra Kirk on 38, with Dianne Rowley third on 37 points in a high scoring morning of golf. This Thursday members are invited to join other members for the Show Public Holiday B, B or B competition hit-off at 12.30pm. On Saturday, the Club Championship began, together with a single stroke competition for the day. Kerry Schnack with 70 nett won the daily competition from Fiona Dowling on 73, second on a countback from Vicki McAulay, third also on a countback from Lisa Cooney. Joy Cartner (0.57m) won the ladies’ approach. In the championships the leading players after the first round in A-grade are Fiona Dowling on 85 from Robyn Robinson on 89; in B Grade Kerry Schnack on 90 from Joy Cartner on 100; in C-grade Lisa Cooney on 103 from Joan Kelly on 106. The championship continues next Saturday and Sunday, together with a daily competition, open also to members not playing in the championship. Note: a ‘sausage sizzle follows the Saturday game. Larry Pershouse continued his winning form with a nett 68 to win A Division from Niel Rieck on 69 and Kieth Rule on 70. Rusty Usmar led the B Division field with 69 nett from Dean Page on 73 and Ed Connell on 74. Val Plath won the Ladies’ Division with 68 nett from Jennifer McKay 73 and Lisa Cooney on 75. Niel Rieck (in the hole) won the Men’s approach on 1and10; Vicki McAulay (0.84m) the Ladies’ approach on 6and15; and Paul McCarragher (0.1m) the Combined approach on 4and 13. Kieth Rule led the Chook Run winners with 30 nett from Joy Cartner (31), Rusty Usmar (32) and Col Dennett (32) both on a spin. Next Tuesday, see you there for the 9.30am shotgun start for the Childerborough Cup in Maryborough. At home a competition will be available for those not going to Maryborough.
A slightly cloudy morning but just right for golf saw a small field take to the course with scores very close in most cases. Terry Smallman managed the win with a 32 losing 2.4 off his handicap, Bill Kirchhoff was second on 34 with five players managing the same score but Bill on top after a countback and losing 1.4 and Stuart Aitchison third losing 0.9. The least Putts went to Terry as did the Combined Longest Drive; Al Ball won the A Grade Nearest the Pin on the 1st with Ross Nicols winning the B Grade Approach on the 1st. The Centre Fairway shot was won by Rob Blows and the Nearest the Pin on the 4th and the Golden Circle was won by Paul McCarragher with the distance now being 4.03m. Next week the May 29 will be played in Bundaberg and those members who have not put their names down to play should ring Diane Rowley, Leigh Hart or Paul McCarragher and book in. Tee off time will be 8am and the game will be a Two Person Ambrose. The week after June 5, we will be playing at Bargara and as this is the first Sunday in the Month it will also be Mug Day so a Stroke and Putt game.
