Million dollar grant for sugar industry
ISIS Central Sugar Mill (ICSM) has secured a $1.23 million grant under the National Water Infrastructure Development Fund, to investigate access to water storage infrastructure in the Gayndah area.
A feasibility analysis will determine if water around the Gayndah area can be accessed on volumes viable to develop land to grow sugarcane.
Other steps such as sugarcane plant variety trials and transport links will also be considered as part of the overall assessment.
ICSM Chairman Peter Russo said the company is committed to increasing sugarcane supply and finding more areas suitable for growing sugarcane is a key priority.
“Currently there are insufficient water allocations available around the Gayndah area and additional water storage infrastructure will likely be required for any potential sugarcane crops to proceed,” Mr Russo said.
Work on the feasibility analysis is expected to commence shortly and continue into early 2017.
