Isis sugar mill tour set for the festival
THE sugar industry has been a part of the Bundaberg region landscape for in excess of 100 years.
The Childers Festival saw the introduction of a sugar industry tour where festival organisers partnered with the Isis Central Sugar Mill in showcasing the industry.
Cr Judy Peters said the co-operation offered by the Mill had been outstanding and the sugar industry tour had been a sell-out.
“The tours, to be held on Thursday and Friday the 28th and 29th of July, will involve a visit to a farm to watch mechanical cane harvesting and to see a mill locomotive hauling away the cane to the Isis Mill.
“Participants are then taken on site to view aspects of the mill operation from the comfort of their coaches before heading to another property to witness a cane fire which has become a rare part of modern sugar harvesting.
“The tour will conclude with a barbecue dinner provided in Childers by the local Rotary service club.”
Cr Peters said the sugar industry tour was one of the initiatives proposed by the Friends of the Festival, a Childers think tank that had produced some great initiatives to run in conjunction with the annual Childers Festival.
Coaches will depart Bundaberg Riverside Parkland at 2.45pm on both days and from the Crescent St carpark in Childers at 3.30pm.
Bookings for the tour can be made by contacting 4130 4100 or online at childersfestival.com.au.
All inclusive cost of the tour is $39 for adults and $15 for children under 12.
