RUGBY LEAGUE: Childers State School’s senior rugby league team has won the grand final for the second consecutive year.

Coach Paul Russo said the team included two invitational players from Cordalba State School, Reece and Joel Felgate.

“Competing in the Bundaberg District Schools Competition, the team lost only one game on its way to the grand final,” Russo said.

The decider was played against Norville State School at Salter Oval.

The first half was a tight affair with the defence of both sides tested with some free-flowing attack from both sides.

“With very little dropped ball from both sides, territorial position was of the utmost importance,” Russo said.

With a leg injury, Childers forward Reece Felgate was forced from the field after only two-and-a-half minutes of play in the first half.

“Every game this season, Bryden Blair, Zac Zeraffa and Luke Adamson played smart and skilfully to organise the team,” Russo said.

The team had a strong defence, particularly from James Harney, Jack Bragg, Jack Edwards and Ryan Hickling, which enabled the team to stay with Norville throughout the first half.

First-half tries for Childers were scored by newcomer Hayden Scown and winger Bailey Pharoah.

The score at half time was Norville 12 Childers 10.

Reece Felgate returned to the field in the second half and his presence had an immediate impact.

Felgate took the ball 30m out from the Norville tryline and busted through tackles to score a try near the posts.

The try was converted and the score was Childers 16 points to Norville 12 points.

The Childers team lifted their intensity in defence and quite simply thwarted all that Norville could throw at them.

Russo said the team executed the game plan precisely, defence was physical and the attack expansive, and Childers defended their lead right up until the full-time whistle.

“Congratulations to the entire team for their dedication to training and their commitment to the game plan during matches,” he said.

“The boys are to be praised for their sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the season,” he said.
