Players pride in the Jersey for Bundaberg coach
FOOTBALL: After a winless campaign in the Inter-City Cup competition, Bundaberg men’s coach Tim Lunnon is calling for more players to have pride in the jersey.
On Saturday the side lost 1-0 to a strong Rockhampton side as Bundaberg struggled to get any cohesion going with a lack of training.
Despite an improvement in the second half, the team failed to take its chances as the opposition secured the win.
Pleased with the performance in the second half, coach Lunnon said those who played did a good job.
“I was really pleased with our second half as we gained more possession and could have scored a goal or two,” he said.
“We struggled to get people together and required fill-in players.”
With this season the first that features three other city teams, Lunnon is hoping next year can bring more commitment from those selected to play.
“As we raise the level and profile of the competition the aim is to get everyone playing who is asked to play,” he said.
“We’re hoping to add more centres next year and make it a little bigger.”
While the men struggled this year, the women excelled as they stayed undefeated.
A 3-2 win over Rockhampton on Saturday followed their impressive 3-0 win over the Fraser Coast in the opening round.
They didn’t have everything their own way though as the team played the second half with no substitutes and the first half with 10 players for 25 minutes due to injury.
Coach Ken Davis said the team focused on the midfield to secure the win.
“We put three in the forward line early before putting a player back when we went down to 10.
“The girls did well to hold the midfield battle and I’m proud of their efforts.”
Praising all his players, Davis couldn’t single out just one. Instead he said the Bundaberg region was getting better in the women’s game.
“Wins definitely show the improvement of the competition,” he said.
“The girls also had the right attitude and provided plenty of drive to succeed.
“With limited resources as well the girls did an amazing job.”
With the NewsMail and Ladies Cup this weekend, some players will now get a deserved week off.
