Italian food has long been a crowd-pleaser, and, as much of it is relatively easy to whip up in the comfort of your own home (we’re looking at you, pasta), it’s also a staple in the modern Australian diet, thus familiar to most. But this series comes at Italy’s delectable cuisine from a different angle – looking at it as a window on history. The enthusiastic John Dickie (right) expands on his book Delizia! The Epic History of the Italians and their Food, travelling across the land to unearth some fascinating tales via the table. In tonight’s second instalment, he’s in the Vatican City, looking at Catholicism’s role in the diet of all Italians, from plebs to popes.
