BUNDABERG Regional Council has approved a mosquito inspection program for the Childers area following the recent discovery of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the area.

Councillor Peter Heuser said while only a very low number of the mosquito in Childers, it was essential to carry out the program immediately.

“The Aedes aegypti mosquito is able to transmit a number of viruses including Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and the Zika virus from one infected person to another,” Cr Heuser said.

“While the mosquitoes are capable of carrying these viruses, there is no immediate threat due to the fact that there are no reported cases of these viruses within our region,” he said.

This mosquito has been found in Gin Gin and has now spread further south to Childers.

The inspection program would target residential and commercial rainwater tanks, is set to start on October 3.

ITCHY: Avoid mosquito bites this spring and summer.
