Doug Schofield memorial chutes unveiled at the rodeo
SILENCE filled the Apple Tree Creek Showgrounds as cowboys tipped their hats for a minute’s silence in memory of a great man and father, Doug Schofield.
Emotions and tears flowed from friends and family of Doug as the rodeo MC, Larry Cann, gave a heart felt speech in memory of his great friend.
Mr Cann said Doug was passionate about the rodeo and loved his horses.
“In honouring him the new cattle chutes at ATC Showgrounds are dedicated to his memory,” Mr Cann said.
In the seven months since his passing the IDPA&I Society committee has struggled with the preparation and organising of events.
Childers Show Society president Peter Warren said Doug was our driving force for all the events and he always looked forward to the rodeo and show.
“He knew what to do and had all the contacts, and we all miss him dearly,” Mr Warren said.
Doug looked forward to the rodeo and took the lead to get the chutes replaced.
Mr Warren said sadly, Doug isn’t here to see the chutes he wanted so desperately to be replaced.
“They look great and will be put to great use.”
Local member for Burnett, Stephen Bennett officially unveiled the new ATC Rodeo sign, dedicated to Doug Schofield.
Mr Bennett said it was an honour to be asked to unveil the sign at the rodeo.
“Leading up to today (Saturday) I was reflecting on Doug and the guidance and advice he gave me early in my career,”
“I know I will be a stronger person for knowing him as will the community he was so very passionate about,”
Mr Bennett complimented the show society of everything they have done for the community and the effort into putting together such great events.
“Named in Doug’s honour, it’s a small gesture and it is important to recognise the significant contribution to the show movement and the Childers community,” Mr Bennett said.
The loud and vocal crowd cheered as the sign was revealed in memory of a character larger than life, Doug Schofield.
“Here’s thinking of you Doug,” Mr Bennett said.
Proudly representing the show society, the 2016 Miss Showgirl Sarah Perry is urging young ladies to enter into next year’s event.
