WITH the warmer weather upon us and in time for the school holidays, the Isis Memorial Swimming Pool has once again opened the gates to swimming lessons.

Tragically, in the past 12 months, 280 people have drowned in Australian waterways, 66 being from Queensland.

Sadly, 16% of drownings in the past 12 months occurred in swimming pools.

The Royal Life Saving National Drowning Report stated they would continue to commit to the notion that all Australian children had the right to a comprehensive swimming and water safety education.

The skills of swimming, survival swimming, and basic rescue are all lifesavers and they would continue providing quality programs for children.

Isis Memorial pool manager Mike Roberts said the free lessons were available until Sunday, October 2.

“I encourage families to bring their young children along and get them accustomed to the water,” Mr Roberts said.

Fear prevents many people from getting into the water and Mr Roberts wants to reassure locals there were lessons for all ages and skill level.

Mr Roberts said Saturday, October 1 was sign-on day and he was looking forward to getting back to training.

If you are a little unsure of lessons and what level you may be at, call into the pool and Mr Roberts would be happy to ease any concerns you may have around the pool.

“I am seeing plenty of new faces at the pool and looking forward to sign-on day,” he said.

Childers Swimming Club has produced many great athletes over the years, including schoolgirl Jaylee McMahon.

Jaylee’s medal tally and record-breaking times could inspire others in the community to join.

Mr Roberts said the Bundaberg Regional Council had done a fantastic job of maintenance and upgrades to the facilities and he was very pleased with the outcome.

Regulars to the pool will be surprised with the refurbishment that had taken place during winter, including extra shade over the pool.

The Childers Swimming Pool staff and management have been busy updating skills and training ready for the season.

“This team represents a group of people committed to patron safety with three lifeguards and all six qualified first-aiders,” he said.

Children as young as nine months can learn to swim, with all group levels beginning with all-important basic water safety skills through to learning correct and efficient strokes.

“Who knows where our next national champions will come from, perhaps right here in Childers,” Mr Roberts said.

For further information on lessons, club sign-on or other pool activities will be posted at the pool as they come up or you can contact the pool directly on 4126 1437 or 0433 735 796 and email 1lane4swimming@gmail.com.
