WHETHER it be the oozing cheese, pillowy bases or perfect toppings, there is something about pizza that has the tastebuds of millions worldwide salivating. October marks World Pizza Month and is a cue to raise a slice to one of the world’s most popular foods. To celebrate, here are some of the pizzas that achieved Guinness World Record titles.

1. Longest pizza

Not surprisingly, the birthplace of pizza was where the record for the longest pizza was achieved, in Naples, Italy. The record was achieved on May 18 this year by the Napoli Pizza Village which created a pizza measuring 1853.88 metres. The pizza ran from the US Consulate (Repubblica Square) to Castel dell’Ovo along the picturesque bay of the Caracciolo’s seafront after 250 proud masters of traditional Neapolitan pizza gathered from all over the world for the record attempt. The recipe for success was 2000kg of flour, 1600kg of tomatoes, 2000kg of fior di latte cheese and 200 litres of olive oil. Five wood-fired portable ovens were specially created for the event. Each oven, controlled by about 25 people, had four openings, two for the pizza to enter in and out and the other two for the wood supply.

2. Largest pizza

Again, the masters of pizza, the Italians, take out another pizza-related record but this time for the largest pizza. It was achieved on December 13, 2012 in Rome. Dovilio Nardi, Andrea Mannocchi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi and Matteo Giannotte from NIPfood at Fiera Roma created the largest pizza with a surface area of 1261.65sq m.

3. Largest pizza base spun in two minutes

Pizza base spinning is a skill best left to the professionals, unless of course you like the thrill of a challenge. For Tony Gemignani of the US, this is a skill he has in spades. Tony achieved the Guinness World Records title for the largest pizza base spun in two minutes on April 20, 2006, when he spun 500g of dough to form a pizza base 84.33cm wide.

4. Highest altitude pizza delivery on land

Pizza Hut Africa took the concept of pizza delivery to new heights. They worked with Yum! Brands (USA) to deliver pizza to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania between May 5-8 this year. The record-breaking delivery was undertaken to mark the launch of Tanzania’s first Pizza Hut.

5. Most pizzas made in 24 hours

This last Guinness World Records title was set much closer to home with the Domino’s Pizza Bundaberg team making 7539 pizzas in 24 hours. The record attempt began on June 16 at 9am and concluded on June 17 at 12.30am, when the team was awarded a Guinness World Records title. All pizzas were from the Domino’s menu and were ordered by the public. Domino’s flew in its finest staff from around Australia and New Zealand for the attempt.
