Sorrento edge closer to national Cup spot
SORRENTO progressed to the final four of the WA leg of the FFA Cup with a 2-0 victory over Wanneroo City on Saturday.
The Gulls scored a goal in each half at Kingsway Sporting Complex to eliminate their lower-tiered opponents from the competition.
The win brings the side a step closer to a second berth in the national leg of the tournament.
Coach Jamie Harnwell told footballwest.com.au his team was gunning for another opportunity to face Australia’s best.
“For the boys who were there against Sydney FC (in 2015), they know the occasion and the experience and they wanted to be back doing that again,” he said.
“We have to get there first and then we aim to be the first WA team to progress past the round of 32.”
Wanneroo assistant coach Brad Hayward said it was pleasing for his Football West Division One team to hold its own against a top-ranked NPL WA side the likes of Sorrento.
“It’s about being the best we can be against the best opposition and playing against teams like Sorrento is where we want to be,” he said.
The Gulls face another Division One side in the Dianella White Eagles in the next round on June 5.
NPL WA action returns this weekend, with thirdplaced Sorrento facing Balcatta after defeating Subiaco 2-0 on May 13.
Trailblazing newcomers Joondalup United (fifth) continues its push for the top four in the local derby against ECU Joondalup (seventh).
