Warriors repeat the treat
THE West Coast Warriors are back-toback WA Netball League champions.
The league side defeated Coastal Sharks 47-43 at the State Netball Centre on Sunday in a tight finish to the biggest clash of WA’s top competition.
The club’s U18 and reserves sides also featured on grand final day but could not get over the line.
It was the second straight year the Warriors had all three of their sides in grand finals, but only came home with the league pennant.
The Warriors held an eight-goal lead heading into the final quarter but the Sharks pulled level with three minutes to go.
The defining moment of the game came soon after when the Warriors’ Emma Cosh, known for her attack rather than defence, made a brave intercept to swing the momentum back to the defending champions.
Warriors coach Kelly Guadagnin labelled the victory a relief after a challenging fourth term.
“It didn’t go our way with all three teams today, but we had a job to get done and we did,” she said.
“Those one-percenters, we pride ourselves on those and they’re the real big things that win you games.
“We spoke about winning moments, and for an attacker to play defence and get an intercept, I was out of my seat, it was outstanding.”
In the reserves, West Coast lost 55-43 to Coastal Sharks, who recorded their sixth-straight title. The U18s were outdone by Perth Lions 56-43.
