Gulls scrape into finals after Subi loss
SORRENTO has advanced to the Top Four Cup in unconvincing fashion after losing to eighthplaced Subiaco in the final round of the NPL WA soccer season.
The Gulls scraped through to the finals series on goal difference over fifth-placed Floreat Athena, which drew with title contenders Inglewood United to pull level with Sorrento on points.
Sorrento lost to the Lions 1-0 at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday after conceding a goal in the 89th minute.
It was the Gulls’ second loss in three days, having been outclassed by South Melbourne 4-1 in the FFA Cup Round of 16 clash in Victoria on Wednesday.
Coach Jamie Harnwell said the Subiaco game was always going to be tough after the side’s big mid-week encounter.
“We weren’t ruthless with our chances and unfortunately Subiaco took their opportunity,” he told nplwa.com.au.
“We can’t be disappointed with our season – top four and the final 16 of the FFA Cup.”
The Gulls face third-seeded Perth in the semi-finals.
Perth thrashed ECU Joondalup 6-1 on Saturday at Dorrien Gardens, leaving the Jacks with a disappointing end to their 2017 campaign in which they finished sixth.
Joondalup United’s maiden season in WA’s top competition ended with the side in 10th after a 2-1 loss to Armadale at Alfred Skeet Reserve. United will be pleased to have done enough to qualify for a spot in the 2018 NPL WA season.
