Athletes celebrate 40 years
KINGSWAY Little Athletics Centre will mark a milestone this month to celebrate its growth over four decades.
The centre will celebrate its 40th anniversary at its October 14 season opening day, with member clubs parading around the Kingsway grounds.
About 580 athletes competed at the centre last year from the Landsdale, Ballajura, Greenwood, Wanneroo and Woodvale little athletics clubs. The centre’s longest serving member is Allan Savage, of Ballajura, who joined with his daughters 34 years ago.
“I came here as a parent. My two girls competed; one for six months, the other for three years. Since then, I’ve been here all the time,” he said.
Mr Savage said when he joined there was one club and about 210 athletes at the centre, which Sheila and Brian Ball started in 1977.
Over the years the membership has evolved with clubs coming and going, including Quinns Rocks, Illawarra, Kingsley, Craigie, Glengarry, Bindoon, Ellenbrook and Goollelal.
Mr Savage said his roles had included president of the Illawarra club, which changed its name to Ballajura, and was part of the executive committee for coaching development for 26 years.
“I retired from that last year, but I’m still on the committee,” he said.
Mr Savage said the centre’s success stories included Breanna Beahan, who was currently ranked third in Australia.
Treasurer Kylee McVee will be officiating field events at the Commonwealth Games.
Michelle Choules said the club was looking forward to getting new facilities, with the City of Wanneroo allocating about $670,000 to demolish its old sheds and replace them this financial year.
The open day will be at the athletics grounds on Spectator Drive, Madeley, from 8am on October 14.
“We want to encourage as many people as we can to come and get involved,” Ms Choules said.
“It’s for all levels of ability to participate and have fun.”
