Road-widening works welcomed

Joondalup Times - - NEWS - Tyler Brown

WORKS have started on a $31 million project to widen Wanneroo Road to a dual carriageway between Joondalup Drive and Flynn Drive.

Federal, State and local government politicians gathered at the side of Wanneroo Road in Carramar on Friday for the start of the project, aimed at relieving congestion in the northern suburbs.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the Main Roads project, together with two interchange projects on Wanneroo Road, would lead to safer, more efficient journeys.

“This has been a big issue for the people of Wanneroo and the whole area and what we’re seeing over time is more people living in this corridor,” she said.

“We’re seeing increasing industrial traffic as we’re serving the industrial lots.

“It’s also a key issue in relation to road safety and I know from police in the area that this has been an area of key concern in relation to road safety, so having that dual carriageway will really help in reducing risks. It will also support the expansion of the industrial corridor in Perth’s north.”

Pearce MHR Christian Porter said the upgrade would remove the bottleneck that 26,000 vehicles experienced daily on Wanneroo Road.

“The upgrade will also significantly improve safety and support the ongoing development of Wanneroo Road as a major northsouth alternative to the Mitchell Freeway,” he said.

Wanneroo MLA Sabine Winton said the project was overdue because there had been many fatal crashes on that “dangerous stretch”.

The road-widening project is jointly funded by the Federal and State governments, which are contributing $24.8 million and $6.2 million respectively.

Construction on the interchanges at Joondalup Drive are expected to start in mid-2018 and at Ocean Reef Road in late 2018.
