Joondalup Times - - WA SENIORS WEEK -

IT is important for retirees to be aware of their cardiac health so as to remain active and healthy and to better be able to enjoy time with friends and family.

Perth Cardiovascular Institute has several tips to ensure good cardiology:

Remain physically active with moderate aerobic exercise such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming or paddling.

The Mediterranean diet is great for good cardiac health.

Know your cholesterol and your blood pressure.

If your resting blood pressure is consistently above 130 systolic (the top number), see your doctor.

Also check your pulse periodically for irregularity – atrial fibrillation (AF) can become more common with age and is a stroke risk. Blood pressure monitors and some smart phone apps can also detect AF. If AF appears possible, see your doctor.

Do not ignore chest, arm or neck/jaw discomfort on exertion.
