A HILLARYS high school student will travel to Sydney in January to take part in the University of NSW’s Women in Engineering Camp.

St Mark’s Anglican Community School Year 11 student Shayla Costello received a grant to attend the four-day camp from the James Kirby Foundation.

During the camp, the students will explore various fields of engineering, and participate in workshops in health and bio systems, energy systems and the digital future.

They will also work in teams on engineering design challenges and visit sites around Sydney that showcase engineering in action.

They will network with successful women in industry and governments and engineering students and graduates.

As the only WA student selected, Shayla said she hoped to have her eyes opened to opportunities www.communitypix.com.au d460941 in engineering.

“One of my interests is in bioscience, but I am looking forward to finding out more about the career options open to me in the future, as well as finding out more about humanitarian engineering,” she said.

The school’s head of science Kelly Nebel said it was important for young women to get an insight into careers such as engineering and explore their potential.
