Yanchep rail step closer

THE rail extension to Yanchep is a step closer after the State Government submitted a business case for the project.

Infrastructure Australia is assessing the Metronet proposal to extend the Joondalup rail line 13.8km to Yanchep by 2021, which will include stations at Alkimos, Eglinton and Yanchep.

A Government statement said a Metronet team was working on detailed plans for the extension and would undertake comprehensive land use planning around the proposed stations to include appropriate density and a variety of land uses, as well as identify value capture opportunities.

Premier Mark McGowan said the Metronet projects was “one of the most ambitious public transport and planning initiatives in WA history” that would revolutionise travel in Perth.

While it required significant planning, legislative changes and approvals, Transport Minister Rita Saffioti said the Government wanted to be on the front foot.

“We are also keen to provide opportunities for local businesses with the capability to help us plan and develop these projects, so they can be planned effectively, delivered quickly and built well, in WA, for the benefit of our community,” she said.

It follows Pearce MHR Christian Porter and Moore MHR Ian Goodenough’s call for Federal funding for Mitchell Freeway’s extension to Romeo Road, Alkimos.

The previous State Government submitted a business case for the project last February and Ms Saffioti said earlier this month that her government had sent initial advice about it to Infrastructure Australia.
