Wonderful watercolours

Joondalup Weekender - - News -

A WORLD of watercolour awaits visitors to an annual art exhibition this weekend.

Artists Paul Hurd, of Sorrento, Iluka’s Cass Gartner and Lucy Papalia, of Carine, have contributed artwork to The Watercolour Society of WA’s awards exhibition.

There will be more than 200 paintings on display at the event, which opens on Thursday night in Fremantle and continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Hurd, whose submissions include two inspired by seeing the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie in Queensland, said the artworks covered a wide variety of subjects.

“The range of paintings will go from floral… to abstract to realist styles and all of a very high standard and keenly priced,” he said.

“It would probably be one of the top exhibitions covering all facets of subject matter whether it be landscapes, abstract to portraits in watercolour, which is most unusual. www.communitypix.com.au d474684

“It’s a fantastic society and they’re all very supportive and also critical.”

Despite his love of watercolours, Hurd said it was a sometimes difficult art form.

“It’s not a very forgiving process,” he said.

“With watercolour, what you put down is what you’re stuck with.”

The exhibition opening night and awards presentation is on Thursday from 6.30pm at The Italian Club in Fremantle.

Entry is free.
