Artist delighted with billboard honour

Joondalup Weekender - - News -

LOCAL artist Judy Rogers said she was honoured to be commissioned to create the latest Joondalup Library billboard.

Skinny White Girl was recently installed on the City of Joondalup’s Inside-Out Billboard following Rogers’s participation in the 2017 Community Art Exhibition.

“This image at first glance is anti-heroic,” Rogers said.

“I am focusing on banal details which in art are often overlooked: the girl’s sombre expression, somewhat day-dreaming eyes, her hunched shoulders pushing against the wind.

“On closer inspection, the painting is laden with implied hidden narrative: the woman’s mysterious gaze looking out of the plane. There is tension between the natural and artificial.

“She is much more than the skinny white girl on the billboard.”

Rogers said she researched many billboards from around the world and also drew on her local knowledge of the library and nearby courthouse.

“An important part of my selection was a memory of the sombre event when a 33-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in the Joondalup Courthouse on December 20, 2016,” she said.

“I also wanted to incorporate the constant presence of wind and the intense light in the location. I wanted to communicate the three important values of beauty, vulnerability and strength.”
