Falcons wary of improving Perth

Joondalup Weekender - - Sport - with Bill Monaghan

WE’LL need to be on our game against Perth at Lathlain Park on Saturday.

Earl Spalding has them playing a good brand of footy and they have improved a lot over the last two seasons.

They move the ball quickly and get good service from midfielders like Clint Jones, Corey Yeo and Cody Leggett.

We’ll have one forced change this week after the serious injury to Kody Manning in last week’s win over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.

He ruptured his posterior and medial cruciate ligaments and fractured his leg when he landed after what appeared to be a simple attempt at a mark in the first quarter.

He will more than likely need surgery to fix the break in his leg and, best case scenario, we’re looking at 10-12 weeks.

We’ve got two byes in that time, so if he does get back within three months, that will hopefully leave four or five games for him at the end of the year.

Andrew Strijk should return on Saturday after he missed the game against Swans. He pulled up with groin tightness at training last Thursday and he is too important to the side to risk with injury.

Debutants Connor West and Baylee James did not look out of place, which is a tick for the level of talent in our reserves side.

Our solid win at Steel Blue Oval followed on from the improvement we showed against the Bulldogs the week before. Losing Manning early meant we were playing one man down for about 95 per cent of the game, so the players showed great resolve to maintain a solid brand of footy.

West Perth will again need to keep tabs on Clint Jones (left) when they face Perth on Saturday.
