Coastal change survey

Joondalup Weekender - - News -

THE City of Joondalup is taking steps to identify and prepare for potential future changes to its coastline from climate change such as erosion and storm surges.

It released a survey today to better understand how the community values and uses the coast, beaches and foreshore areas. Feedback will be used to identify potential adaptation options for vulnerable coastal areas.

Once these have been identified, the City will undertake further engagement with the community and stakeholders.

This will then form the basis of a Coastal Hazard Risk Management Adaptation Plan for the City.

Mayor Albert Jacob said the City had been preparing and adapting to future impacts on the its coast by informing property owners and the community of the potential risks and undertaking coastal monitoring.

It is also developing an overarching Coastal Infrastructure Adaptation Plan, which the council unanimously endorsed at this month’s meeting.

A council document said there were significant infrastructure assets along the coast including roads, public lighting, drainage, carparks, dualuse paths, playgrounds, parks, community buildings and areas of existing and planned residential development.

Mr Jacob said the survey was the next step in engaging with the community to “ensure their views are included in the City’s coastal adaptation planning”.

The survey can be completed at www.joon until June 29.

The coastal survey will ensure the community’s views are included in future plans.
