Ten out of ten as Wolves storm home

Joondalup Weekender - - Sport -

NOT even a 19-point deficit heading into the last term was enough to stop the Joondalup Wolves claiming their 10th straight State Basketball League victory.

There appears to be no stopping the side as it heads into an away clash against the 10thplaced Cockburn Cougars for its 11th-straight win tomorrow night.

It’s an ominous task for the hosts with Joondalup’s only loss of the season coming nearly two months ago.

The Wolves’ winning streak appeared to be lost at the end of the third period at HBF Arena last Saturday night when they were 80-61 down against crosstown rivals the Stirling Senators in the Battle of Joondalup.

What’s more, Joondalup was without its two best shooters Trian Iliadis (work commitments) and Brian Sullivan (brother’s wedding).

But the hosts landed 36 points to 12 in the final term to storm home to a famous fivepoint win 97-92.

Import Jalen Billups led the way with 33 points, while guard Ben Ironmonger put in a standout performance in the absence of Iliadis and Sullivan with 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

The Lady Wolfpack came frustratingly close to snapping its six-game losing streak but fell by two points 56-54 to the seventh-placed Senators.

Kourtney Zadina led the scoring with 13 points, while Ellyce Ironmonger took nine rebounds.

The Wolves’ seven-game winless run has them secondlast on the table heading into the clash against the ninthplaced Cougars.
