A FIGHT at a girls’ football match in Heathridge, that resulted in a 13-year-old girl being charged over an opponent’s serious spinal and facial injuries, is believed to have started because of an umpiring dispute.

Police allege the girl asked the victim if she wanted to fight while the pair were arguing about the officiating during a Friday night match between Ocean Ridge and Warwick Greenwood on June 8.

Investigators have accused the Hocking resident of aggressively pulling the 15-year-old victim’s ponytail before tackling her to the ground and repeatedly punching her to the face.

Police said the victim received bruising and swelling to her face and was left with prolonged dizziness and concussion.

It is understood she had a cervical spinal injury and a haemorrhage in one of her eyes.

It was unclear what action caused the spinal injury.

The victim is receiving ongoing treatment in Perth Children’s Hospital.

Police charged the alleged offender with grievous bodily harm and she is due in Joondalup Children’s Court on August 7.

Junior club presidents were told to refer media questions to the WA Football Commission.

The WAFC confirmed it was aware of the incident but would not comment on whether it was conducting its own investigation as the case was headed for court.
