STUDENTS from the only WA primary school to perform at an international music festival shone brightly in Sydney to bring home gold and silver.

Gooseberry Hill primary orchestra collected the ultimate prize at the Australian International Music Festival, while the school choir narrowly missed gold.

Principal Patrick Bourke said he was delighted to retire on a high note after 12 years at the school.

He praised Kalamunda Senior High School staff for allowing former Gooseberry Hill primary students to join the tour, led by deputy principals Fiona Elsegood and Anne Bell.

Students presented Mr Bourke with an engraved medallion of the school crest at his ‘leavers’ ceremony’ on Friday.

Virtuoso pianist David Helfgott assisted the school community to raise $60,000 for the trip by performing a soldout recital at the school in March.
