All Mayors are elected through popular vote. Councils are able to choose the method of election for the Mayor. They can be elected by the electors of the district or by the councillors.
Ratepayers are responsible for electing the CEO The CEO provides input and advice but is bound to honour all decisions made by council.
The CEO can overrule decisions made by the council. The council is responsible for appointing the CEO and is also responsible for managing and reviewing their performance.
The CEO has a vote on teams appearing before council. The CEO compiles the council agenda and attends meetings to answer questions as required but has no vote.
