Guilty plea to mayor attack
A PENSIONER who attacked the City of Swan Mayor with a microphone after an electors’ meeting pleaded guilty in a Midland court last week. Warren John Jeater appeared in Midland Magistrates Court on Tuesday charged with assaulting a person performing a public function and unlawful damage. The 67-year-old was accused of hitting Mayor David Lucas over the head with a microphone that left him with a bloody 2cm wound above the eye and broken glasses. Jeater entered pleas of guilty to both charges, with his lawyer requesting the matter be postponed so a presentence report could be prepared. His lawyer said the allegations were “quite serious” and given his client had “some history” of criminal damage he sought a six-week adjournment. Magistrate Kevin Tavener granted the adjournment and reminded Jeater that he was on bail and to not get himself in any trouble. As he left court, Jeater placed a finger to his mouth to signal ‘no comment’ to questions directed at him. He is due to be sentenced on September 27.
