Murder accused fined over stealing offences
A SAWYERS Valley man who is due to face court next month over murder was fined last week for committing stealing offences.
Matt Lewis Whittaker appeared via video link in Midland Magistrates Court on Friday charged with two counts of stealing, which he was fined for.
The 36-year-old remanded in Hakea Prison has been accused of using a shovel to try murder a Finnish national on July 28 near Paulls Valley on the Bibulmun Track.
It is alleged Mr Whittaker hit a 33-year-old man from Finland with the car he was driving before hitting him with a shovel and causing a significant head wound.
Mr Whittaker was charged with attempting to kill and appeared in the Midland Magistrates Court in July. Magistrate Martin Flynn adjourned the matter to August.
He reappeared in front of Magistrate Jan Whitbread on August 8 at Stirling Gardens.
Mr Whittaker has been remanded in Hakea and is due to face the murder charge on September 26.
